FAQs
What is a Kantha?
Kantha refers to a traditional domestic craft technique from Bengal (now West Bengal and Bangladesh) where used fabrics (saris and dhotis) are layered or quilted and hand stitched to make a blanket.
It is the creative, resourceful re-use of cloth by women for home use. Each Kantha is an individual's creative expression.
We wanted to share a definition of Kantha from our experts in Jaipur who have been sourcing Kantha for over 50 years.
"A Kantha is a record of life, and an expression of life. They are made for personal use and not to impress. Each imperfection, each decision about a colour, each repair, each stitch style makes each Kantha more beautiful. A Kantha holds many personal choices in one piece, decisions being made by the maker for someone. It's a kind of folk art."
We asked the family how they feel about Kantha being made into garments.
"We see the new life brought to the old fabrics, and see the life of the Kantha will be extended by more years to come. If they remain as blankets they fall out of use, hidden; but as garments they live on. When you wear them the world can see them."
What does "one of one" mean?
Every kantha we use is completely unique, crafted by hand with layers of repurposed cottons that have been patched, layered and stitched together. One kantha makes one garment. No two kantha are ever the same. Each is therefore truly a 'one of one'.
Are your products limited edition?
The shapes we use are consistent - our Chore Jacket, Cardigan, Every Body Trouser, Sweatshirt, T-Shirt and Bag remain the same. It's the fabric that changes, and because each kantha is unique, once a garment is made, that exact combination of fabric, colours, pattern placement and stitch can never exist again. There is only ever one, and therefore every piece is unrepeatable.
